Reliable population estimates are foundational to effective public health programmes and disease prevention, control and elimination. This guidance details how to systematically assess, compare and strengthen population estimation approaches used for planning and implementation. Specifically, it aims to support programmes in identifying inconsistencies, biases and methodological gaps in current population estimates, while promoting a shared understanding of available data sources and underlying assumptions.
